BREWING RESOURCES

STEP-BY-STEP BREWING INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1 - CLEANING
  • Brew cleaning products:  One-Step or Straight A
  • One of the most important steps before beginning is to clean ALL equipment.  Including buckets, tubing, kettle, spatula, syphon tube, thermometer.
  • Never EVER use dish soap, even when done brewing.  Your future brews will taste like soap and ruin your equipment.
  • Be sure to air dry after cleaning.
STEP 2 - STEEPING THE GRAINS

20-25 minutes between 152 & 160 degrees.

Do not exceed 170 degrees.

STEP 3 - BOILING THE WATER

Bring water to boil and Slowly add 2oz. hops.  Keep at gentle rolling boil for approximately 60 minutes, constantly stirring bottom and sides of pot.

STEP 4 - SANITIZING
  • Sanitizing Chemicals:  IO-Star or Star San
    ;
  • This procedure must be done every time after the boil.
  • This will disinfect your equipment once you have finished with your brew process.
STEP 5 - CHILLING THE BREW

Place pot in ice bath and cool to approximately 70 degrees.

Using thermometer to measure temperature

10 IMPORTANT BREWING TIPS

  1.  Use a larger kettle than batch calls for to prevent boil-over.
  2.  A wort chiller would help in chill down process.
  3.  Use a large siphon for 5 gallons or more.
  4.  Make a yeast starter for bolder brews.
  5.  Oxygenate the wort.
  6.  Carboy handles are important for lifting.
  7.  Use a larger fermenting bucket to provide more air space.
  8.  Get blow off tubing.
  9.  Use foil around burners to prevent messes from possible boil over.
  10. Always important to have an extra pack of yeast for backup.

SMELLING TECHNIQUES

Distant Sniff – Smelling the beer from a few inches below your nose.

Short Sniff – Small, short sniffs, like how a dog sniffs at the ground.

Long Sniff – One long, full nasal inhalation.

Covered Sniff – Cover the glass, swirl the beer for a few seconds, then uncover and sniff.
